I’m happy to announce the end of my winter hibernation from blogging with this post.

Over the past 3 months, me and 15 other blogs have been working together to create Portals, a collaborative venture into sight, sound, hand holding and skipping.

Okay, maybe not hand holding and skipping… YET. But soon. REAL soon.

Beyond just the usual “co-premieres” and “tebowing” that other blogs offer, Portals will also be concentrating on live shows, and more inter-blog collaboration than you could shake a stick at.

Here, recalling some of last summers musical bedroom antics, New York’s Gracie combines with Steffaloo for a single that spreads out like a sonic oil spill, soaking everything in it’s path with a layer of reverb and glistening distant vocals.

With collaborations like these, who needs a solo project?

Well, this is just a delightful treat.

Mat Cothran (of Coma Cinema) has released a third and (apparently) final EP as Elvis Depressedly.

“Crazier With You”, the second song on the EP is exactly the kind of twisted that makes me love all of Cothran’s stuff. A delicate malaise colored with the feeling of freezing to death.

I think that might be love.

When it rains it pours.

Having been searching to the far corners of the internet for anything that could hold my attention long enough to post about for the past few weeks, I exhaustedly rose from bed this morning ready for another long search of soundcloud’s nether regions, only to find a veritable cornucopia of fantastic treats laid out across my e-mails digital doorstep.

I guess Halloween is the turning point into the fight for year end supremacy.

The first thing I noticed was this fantastic screamer from Italy’s “Estasy” I got in from Acephale, which has long been one of my favorite labels (right up there with True Panther and Tri-Angle).

Apparently recorded “With minimal effects, and for the most part live.” Locus Solus’ first track, “Wild Wants” is a haunting and driven reminder that we’re moving away from Summer.

And if these are the types of tracks that are going to start rolling in now that we’ve done away with the heat… I say let Winter take over the world.

“There are times when projects just seemed doomed from the start. Ideas, however grand they may be, sometimes never quite make it due to unforeseen forces. You may even start to wonder if what you envisioned was somehow never meant to be - cursed, if you will. I was beginning to believe my latest comp was vexed…

Lo, and behold, after much sweat and some bloodshed, I am proud to release 2011’s Halloween mix entitled - “My Dearest Killer” - featuring 15 exclusive tracks by some of my favorite artists of 2011 (and 2010). For this comp, I asked artists to either compose a giallo soundtrack inspired tune or cover/rework their favorite horror film song. What I received was more than what I ever could hope for.

From The North Sea’s horror/drone opening, “Broken Bats”, to the amazingly lush reworking of a track from the film “Jacob’s Ladder” by ∆AIMON - those that did reworks/covers are entirely atmospheric, down right spine tingling and fresh. Dream Boat contributed with an eerie rendition of the “Rosemary’s Baby” theme song and CVLT CLASSICS churned out a super funky track entitled “Tropico”. Inspired by “Let The Right One In,” Running In The Fog delivers a sweetly seductive ode to a vampire in “Let It In”.

For the original songs, I worked with some people again and some first timers. From the ever prolific Ʌ (Arc) that appeared on “Abraded Ghosts” in 2010 - once again serving up an ominous nebulous/goblinic composition. Basketball Camp executed a pulsating paranoia tune, “Fuhhly,” and GOSTS supplied sublime giallo-disco in “Knife Couture”. Others delve into conjuring the ethereal/supernatural being - such as Kidcity’s remorseful “What Have You Done“ and Majical Cloudz - to bit of a playful search for apparitions from Poor Spirits. Not to forget the atmospheric “look over your shoulder” pieces from Magic Fades and Moon Mirror. Lastly, I’m extremely grateful to Lust for his “Night Voyeur” tune since I reached out to him somewhat last minute and, like a champ, created a funky erotic-giallo piece.

Also honored to be FINALLY working with one of my favorite people ever - Ghibli turns in an exploitation-disco tune entitled “Patrick”. And, like all good horror films that leave you wanting for more, you don’t know if the good guy or villain prevailed.

I want to give my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you who took time out of your busy schedules to create this extremely wonderful body of work. Words alone cannot express enough gratitude to each and everyone one of you involved. And without further ado - “My Dearest Killer…“

This delicious little EP by Nashville’s Walsh (aka Brandon Biondo) just hit recently, and is everything I could have hoped for.

Give a listen to the track above. Somebody, the second track on the EP, is a fantastic collaborative effort with Persona La Ave. Colored up with funk and slammed home with some delicious synth work, it’s just kinky enough to be make you want to listen, and just grooving enough to make you start moving.

Keep Shelly In Athens recently announced they would be coming out with a new 12” EP, Our Own Dream (Fall, 2011, Forest Family). From this I have finally realized there has to be some sort of greater power, and it likes to give me good music.

Then I realized that would mean It’s the same greater power that likes to put love seats in the middle of the freeway so that I can run into them at 2:00am.

I guess it’s a wash.

Daily Doses: Flashing Red Lights “Weekdays” From Faster Horses (2011)

This is the best noise you’ve ever heard.

On Flashing Red Lights’ last E.P., Various Successes I’ve Had (2011) , Mack played hard with programmed beats over stunningly intimate vocals to beautiful effect.

And from the clattering ambient distance in “Conviction 1” to the soaked sadness in “Gold Light”, I have to admit, I kinda thought he had conquered sound about as much as was possible given the restraints of recording every part himself in his bedroom.

Little did I know he was just showing off his control of it.

Here he let’s it run wild.

I’d say Faster Horses sounds like Industrial smashed into Instrumental Hip-Hop, bled over with singer/songwriter before it’s drowned in a pool of Eno’esque (it’s a word) ambient noise.

In other words, it sounds like nothing else I can put my finger on.

Album opener “Weekdays” opens with a guitar that sounds like caged beast, raging against the world in the middle of an iron factory. Meanwhile a mournful vocal waxes and wanes with lines as poetic as:

“I come home from work and you come home from work, and we lie dead as leaves and dull as Winter.”

And as bluntly honest as:

“You spent Christmas Day getting drunk alone.”

It’s a track that captures the feeling fading connection and increasing emotional distance by counter-pointing the softly sung vocals with all the rage smashing into the background.

And ain’t that just the way it is?
