Daily Doses: Arrange + Ricky Eat Acid “P.S.L.W” From Single (2011)

Some things are worth coming back for.

Sam Ray of Ricky Eat Acid and Malcom Lacey of Arrange have been doing amazing things on their own for quite some time now. Malcom’s Plantation  got a very respectable tap for a 7.7 from p4k and Sam Ray has been mentioned on this blog at least 5 times, and probably that or more on most on blogs on the internet.

Kids these days…. Oh how quickly they grow.

On the third Ricky Eat Acid release, You Get Sick You Regret Things (2010), Sam Ray really showcased his talents as a multi-instrumentalist, as well as his ability to work well with the negative space in a song. Meanwhile, Malcom’s command of stark lyrical imagery against dark instrumental backdrops is what gave Plantation it’s depth. So the combination of those seems like it could be breathtaking.

And it is.

Here, on their first collaboration, “P.S.L.W”. All of their skill sets are married into a dark bleeding track of tremendous depth that shakes a little bit as it slides across your soul. One of the best tracks of the year.

Daily Doses: Ricky Eat Acid “I Found Your Flower Crown” From Sometimes We’re Blue (2010)

As always, little excites me more than new tracks from Sam Ray of Ricky Eat Acid.

With his latest E.P., REA finds a beautiful line between his ambient release You Get Sick, You Regret Things and his second E.P., HUGS, with it’s traditional movements and drifting edge.

“I Found Your Flower Crown”, the album opener, is an ideal example. Incorporating vibes and synth string patches to create a sonic palette that is then expanded by a darting beat that keeps the song moving along. It’s a beautiful 3:38 second build showing off Sam Ray’s heady control of the subtler elements in a songs progression.

Daily Doses: Ricky Eat Acid “I’ve Never Been This Happy b4” From Dance With U (2010)

Sam Ray from Ricky Eat Acid has never failed to surprise me.

This is the third track I’ve posted from R.E.A from three different E.P’s in three different months. Each with it’s own very distinctly different, and very seasonal qualities.

With “Smile”, from his Hugs E.P.,  we got a taste of a dusky Eternal Sunshines-esque looping romp through a quickly fading summer.

More recently he “teamed” up with Sean Bowie from Teams for “Halls”, a more beat driven synthy ode that dropped out the swells in favor of 1960 computer sounds and wandering arpeggios. Not exactly a Winter banger, but definitely removed from the Summer swelter.

Now for “I’ve Never Been This Happy Before”, the fourth track on his most recent E.P. Dance With U…. Well, Halloweens come early kids, and it’s not knocking for treats this year. It’s kicking down your door and dragging you kicking into the dark.

Twisted screams, heavy machine drums, and synth blasts combine with quick piano hits to form a track sexy enough to tempt you to the door, and just creepy enough to keep you locked into the rhythm, until it’s too late.

I’m not sure when or if R.E.A will lock into a permanent style. But as long as he keeps adapting this well and in this many surprising ways, I’m not sure he should.

Daily Doses: Ricky Eat Acid (Feat. Teams) “Halls” (2010)

I have been sadly remiss in posting some amazing tracks I’ve received recently, including Ricky Eat Acid’s fantastic ambient works album You Get Sick; You Regret Things which was sent my way earlier last month. So getting an opportunity to rectify that, as well as post something that has been tenderly touched by the hands of Sean from Teams is just a two handed slam dunk I couldn’t pass up.

In “Halls” the delicate key work that was very present in Ricky Eat Acid’s recent work combines with the beat making prowess of Teams to create a track that’s slinky, sultry, seductive, and classy.

I often picture the collaborations between the many DIY artists on here to be like the creation of new atoms. Two elements combined in a way that while you might not have pictured it before, suddenly it’s hard to picture them apart.

Daily Doses: Ricky Eat Acid “SMILE” From Hugs (2010)

“I’m not a bad person, but I’d be a better starfish.”

This is the quote that adorns Ricky Eat Acid’s myspace page. Whether it’s intended as such or not, it sits there like a mission statement for every kid whose always felt that time was out of sync with them. Like a call to everyone who’s unsure where they fit in the grand scheme of things.

SMILE is from Ricky’s as of yet unreleased HUGS (EP? LP?) and is a smooth build of a dream pop jam, with an eternal sunshine-esque synth repeating over steadily building swells. It’s a summer song of pools and daydreams, lazy sunday afternoons, and the crash of waves on the beach.

It’s a great song for a person…

But it’s the perfect autobiography for a starfish.
